Description: If you submit to only directory then submit to the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). The SEO and traffic rewards are incredible. There are thousands of sites that use ODP data in their sites. Google may or may not provide extra weight having the DMOZ listing.
What you get:

You receive a free listing with great PR. You can submit to a second regional link if your site applies (brick and mortar businesses would have the best chance).

PageRank Value: DMOZ.org has a PageRank of 8. Your links are often displayed on PageRanks ranging from 4 to 6.
Traffic Value:

The traffic value is tremendous. The website is arguably the best known directory on the web. Many sites use the site to get their content, meaning that you you will receive traffic and backlinks from all kinds of sites (hundreds or possibly thousands of sites).
Cost: Always free.
Sites Not Allowed: Illegal sites.
Approval Time: Don't hold your breath. It usually takes 6 months or more to get listed, but it depends on the category. I know of one category that has not had one addition in a year, not that there aren't hundreds of requests. It may be worth looking for a category that has had new sites added recently. "Submit it and forget" it is a common saying.
Submission Instructions Carefully choose a category from the directory and click "Suggest URL". Complete the short form. Read and follow the instructions carefully.
Intangibles:
  • An Open Directory Project listing provides legitimacy for a small business.
  • A listing improves your sites ability to attract advertisers.
  • DMOZ has some problems. There are many views that DMOZ editors and metas are evil and egotistical and that there is a vested interest in keeping the system broken.The directory is losing its relevancy and importance.
  • Google has been moving away from its importance in the site's data.
  • Check out the Open Directory Top Listed stats. Please note that the website is owned by TimeWarner (owners of CNN and AOL). I will let you make your own conclusions.
